Benedikt Gröndal Sveinbjarnarson was born on October 6, 1826, in Bessastaðir, Álftanes. He died on August 2, 1907.
There are over a hundred manuscripts in the manuscript collection associated with the name of Benedikt Gröndal, and they are extremely diverse. Only a small portion of them are on display in the exhibition that has opened in the museum.
The collection preserves manuscripts of Benedikt's works. These include two versions of his biography, Dægradvöl , fragments from Örvar-Odd's Slaying , Þórðar saga Geirmundarsonar , and Rímur af Göngu-Hrólfur . There are also his translations, including Homer's Iliad .
Forty manuscripts contain academic writings and essays. Most of them are manuscripts on Nordic studies and natural history, many of which contain numerous drawings.
The exhibition runs until March 12, 2018.
