On November 1, 2018, the exhibition Nordic Bookbinding opened at the National Library. It is a traveling exhibition that is held in all the Nordic countries every four years. The exhibition is organized by the JAM group, which was founded on October 1, 1989 after a course in artistic bookbinding, which was held by the Bookbinders' Association at the Reykjavík Vocational School. Danish bookbinders Arne Møller Pedersen and Jakob Lund were the instructors. The group then named itself after their initials. This was a major boost for the bookbinding profession and led to six bookbinders participating in the Nordic competition the following year. After that, there was a break in Nordic exhibitions for 14 years, and it is said that there was a generational change in the profession. In 1998, it was decided to try to revive this Nordic collaboration, and in 2001, rules were finalized for a new arrangement for Nordic bookbinding exhibitions. A special jury of selected people judges the bookbinding and selects 25% of the books for a special honorary category. The first competition under these new rules took place in 2005 and had 81 participants, 14 of whom were from Iceland. The competition is held every 4th year. This time there are 51 participants, four of whom are Icelanders and two of whom receive honorary recognition, Hrefna Ársælsdóttir and Ragnar Gylfi Einarsson. Guðlaug Friðriksdóttir and Kristín Þóra Guðbjartsdóttir are also participating in the exhibition from Iceland. At the opening, Ingibjörg Steinunn Sverrisdóttir, National Librarian, and Georg Páll Skúlason, Chairman of Grafí, gave speeches.
The exhibition ends on December 3rd.
