The Icelandic Literary Society
200th anniversary exhibition at the National Library

On Thursday, May 12th at 2:00 PM, an exhibition was opened at the National Library on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Icelandic Literary Society, attended by a large crowd.

Addresses were given by Jón Sigurðsson, President of the Icelandic Literary Society, Ingibjörg Steinunn Sverrisdóttir, National Librarian, and the President of Iceland, Mr. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, who also opened the exhibition.

A musical program was offered at the opening. Soprano Þóra Einarsdóttir and harpist Elísabet Waage performed Atli Heimir Sveinsson's song "Ástkæra, ylhýra maðil" to the poem by Jónas Hallgrímsson. They also performed Jón Þórarinsson's song "Íslenskt vögguljóð á harpu" to the poem by Halldór Kiljan Laxness.

The exhibition is funded by the state treasury and sponsors the Icelandic Literary Society, GAMMA and Landsvirkjun.
