Summer exhibition of manuscripts at the National and University Library of Iceland
The exhibition Paper Manuscripts and Leather Scrolls has been opened in the museum. This is a summer exhibition organized by the manuscript collection and you can see various examples of leather scrolls and paper manuscripts. The exhibition includes the remarkable Piles Belt, which is probably the only one of its kind that has survived in Iceland. The scroll is a leather scroll with a reading or prayer against piles or gout, and it is believed that such prayer scrolls were quite common in their time, but they were confiscated or burned during the witchcraft persecutions of the 17th century. The exhibition also features reproductions of leather scrolls along with manuscripts from later centuries. The exhibition will run through the summer.
