Paper manuscripts and parchments leaves

    Paper manuscripts and parchments leaves

Summer exhibition of manuscripts at the National and University Library of Iceland

The National and University Library of Iceland has now opened the exhibition Paper Manuscripts and Leather Scrolls . This is a summer exhibition organized by the manuscript collection and features various examples of leather scrolls and paper manuscripts. The leather scrolls were often preserved by being reused as covers for paper manuscripts. Among them is the remarkable Kveisubelti, which is probably the only one of its kind that has been preserved in Iceland. The scroll is a leather scroll with a reading or prayer against kveisu or gout, and it is believed that such prayer scrolls were quite common in their time, but they were confiscated or burned during the witchcraft persecutions of the 17th century. The scroll was used as a talisman and was usually tied around the patient. The scroll probably dates from around 1600. The exhibition also features reproductions of leather scrolls along with manuscripts from later centuries.

The exhibition runs until November 21, 2014.
