On March 8, Hallgrímur Pétursson's autograph manuscript of the Passion Psalms was accepted into the Icelandic National Register of the Memory of the World. The manuscript is preserved in the manuscript collection of the National Library of Iceland – University Library and is part of the manuscript collection of President Jón Sigurðsson (JS 337 4to). Hallgrímur wrote the manuscript in 1659 and sent it to Ragnheiður Brynjólfsdóttir in 1661, but the hymns were published in print five years later, in 1666, with hymns by Rev. Guðmundur Erlendsson. It is known that Hallgrímur wrote several manuscripts of the Passion Psalms, but the National Library's manuscript is the only one that has survived. Jón Sigurðsson acquired the manuscript in 1856, and the National Library of Iceland acquired Jón's manuscript collection after his death in 1879.
The Passion Hymns are considered to be outstanding in Icelandic hymnody in terms of interpretation, structure and style, and have enjoyed great popularity among the nation over the centuries, having been published over 90 times, including in a high-quality edition by the National Library in 1996.
On this occasion, a small exhibition has been set up in the foyer of the Icelandic Museum, where the recognition document is on display along with a reproduction of the manuscript and several transcriptions of the Passion Psalms.
The manuscript has been recorded and photographed and is available at handrit.is .
Four works were approved for Iceland's national register of Memory of the World, as stated on the website of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science .
