Sermons and Passion Hymns from Previous Centuries

Sermons and Passion Hymns from Previous Centuries

A large part of the data received by the manuscript collection each year are private archives from the twentieth century. They are usually diaries and correspondence of individuals or meeting minutes and other documents of associations from the middle of the century or thereabouts. From time to time, however, older data is received by the collection. In December, funeral orations and sermons were received from the grave of Rev. Magnús Hákonarson (1812-1875) in Steingrímsfjörður, who was a guide in the Icelandic expedition of Paul Gaimard (1793-1858) in 1835 and 1836 and co-editor Baptism in 1837 together with President Jón Sigurðsson (1811-1879). His sermons and funeral orations date from the fifties and sixties of the nineteenth century, but in addition there is an older copy of the collection of proverbs by Rev. Eyjólfur Jónsson of Völlar (1670-1745), Adagiologicon Islandicum.
In December, the manuscript collection also received a manuscript Passion hymns Rev. Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614-1674) from the year 1740. The manuscript is privately owned in Germany where it was purchased at an antiques sale, but was loaned to the manuscript collection for cataloging and reproduction. The manuscript can be viewed here.
Icelandic manuscripts from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries can thus still be found in the possession of individuals, both domestically and abroad.
