In the fall of 2016, the brothers Guðmundur Andri and Örnólfur Thorssonir presented the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Foundation with an extensive collection of foreign books from their father, the writer Thor Vilhjálmsson. The collection contains many of the most important pearls of world literature, especially contemporary European literature. This is a generous gift from one of Iceland's most beloved writers of recent times and a prolific translator of foreign literature into Icelandic, but translations are intended to play a special role in the international language center. Throughout his life, Thor sought to closely monitor what was trending in world literature at any given time. He saw it as part of his writing career and the cultural promotion that he always cultivated in this country. He approached books, read them carefully, often with his pen in the air, so that the books bear the personal mark of whoever happened to hold them in their hands.
Veröld – Vigdís' House was officially opened at a ceremony on Thursday, April 20, 2017. On that occasion, there is a micro-exhibition in the museum of the books that will be available in the National Library. The exhibition will end on September 5.
