Private publishing, micro-publishing and other forms of distribution

Major changes have occurred in the last decades of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st in artistic creation, publishing methods, and the media.

The mandatory return of audio recordings such as records, magnetic tapes and cassettes to the National Library of Iceland was introduced by the Act on Mandatory Returns to Museums No. 43/1977 , and by Act No. 20/2002 , films, radio and television material and works on electronic media are made mandatory to return. The National Library of Iceland – University Library accepts all mandatory return materials, including videos and video discs and materials on electronic media.

Publishing content in electronic form is growing rapidly, and in order to manage electronic publishing, the electronic database Rafhlaðan was established by the National Library of Iceland – University Library. Micro-publishers have emerged and flourished with new media channels in recent decades, and publishing is becoming increasingly easier.
