Exhibition about Hallgrímur Pétursson

    Exhibition about Hallgrímur Pétursson

On Thursday, September 11, an exhibition was opened at the National Library to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of hymn poet Hallgrímur Pétursson. The exhibition is a collaborative project between the National Library of Iceland – University Library and the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies. Lectures were given by Ingibjörg Steinunn Sverrisdóttir, National Librarian, Margrét Eggertsdóttir, Professor at the Árni Magnússon Institute, who wrote the exhibition text, and Sigríður Hjördís Jörundsdóttir and Halldóra Kristinsdóttir, who compiled the manuscript for the exhibition. Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson opened the exhibition and the Spilmenn Ríkínís performed music to Hallgrímur's texts. Around 120 manuscripts with Hallgrímur's poetry are on display. Among them are many editions of the Passion Psalms, including the poet's only surviving autograph of the Passion Psalms , JS 337 4to, which was written in 1659 and was among the manuscripts of Jón Sigurðsson that were purchased in 1877 for the National Library. The story behind the manuscript is remarkable, as Hallgrímur gave it to Bishop Ragnheiður Brynjólfsdóttir in 1661.
