The National Library is 25 years old.

Today, December 1, marks 25 years since the National Library was opened. In an interview with Morgunpóstinn on November 14, 1994, National Librarian Einar Sigurðsson said, among other things: "The National Library of Iceland – University Library, as the new library is to be called, will be a library of the 21st century that should be able to bring about revolutionary changes for the better, both in terms of working conditions and the care of national treasures."

The news also says: "Gegnir must be considered one of the museum's more interesting advantages, but it is a library system that the University Library and the National Library of Iceland started using a few years ago, but the National Library will now rely on it. With Gegnir, you can get in touch from anywhere in the country and abroad as well. A telephone and modem are all that is needed. You can also search in files and databases abroad."
