The National Library will be opened on May 4th.

The National Library will be opened on May 4th.

The National Library of Iceland – University Library, Þjóðarbókhlaðan, will open on May 4, 2020, after having been closed since March 16, when a ban on gatherings was imposed due to the coronavirus (Covid-19).

The museum will be open with certain restrictions imposed by the ban on gatherings that will take effect on May 4. The restrictions are that there are no more than 50 people (visitors and employees) in the same space at the same time and that there must always be 2 meters between people.

The museum is open 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM weekdays. Closed on weekends.

The National Library can accommodate 100 visitors at the same time. There is seating for the following number of visitors on each floor.

    • 4th floor 40 guests
    • 3rd floor 40 guests
    • 2nd floor 10 guests
    • 1st floor 10 guests

In the lobby on the 1st floor there is a reception desk, where guests announce their arrival at the National Library.

In the lobby you can return books and pick up orders. You can send an email to utlan@landsbokasafn.is and order materials, which will then be picked up in the lobby during opening hours, after confirmation has been received that the material is ready for delivery.

The due date for books that have been on loan is May 14th, except for internal and short-term loan books, where the due date is May 4th.

Guests are responsible for disinfecting tables, keyboards, and photocopiers they use upon arrival and after use. Disinfectant and gloves are available at the front desk on each floor.

Reading rooms are open, but group study rooms are closed.

The following services are reduced and/or unavailable:

    • The restaurant and food, coffee and snack facilities on the 2nd floor are closed.
    • Group work – group study rooms cannot be booked.
    • It is not possible to shrink and "hold space"
    • You can only stay on the floor where there are free chairs, but guests may pick up materials on other floors.

Staff reserves the right to close or evacuate areas as necessary. Guests who do not follow the above rules may be evicted.

The library in Lögberg will be open in a similar manner, with a summer opening and the two-meter rule in place.

Remember to respect the 2 meter rule!
