This year marks 70 years since the inauguration of the National Theatre, which took place on the first day of summer, April 20, 1950, and that day truly marked a turning point in Icelandic history and culture. Its anniversary performance this year is the popular play Kardemommubærinn by Norwegian playwright and songwriter Thorbjörn Egner (1912–1990), which is dedicated to 70 years of children's performances at the National Theatre. The work premiered on the Main Stage in 1960 and is now being performed for the sixth time.
To mark the anniversary, a micro-exhibition is currently underway at the National Museum of Iceland with drawings and maps by Thorbjörn Egner, which is also the featured item for the month of May at the National Library of Iceland – University Library.
The drawings belong to two private collections of the Theatre Museum, which are in the custody of the National Library. On the one hand, the collection of Klemenzar Jónsson, actor and director (1920–2002), under the collection number Lbs 2019/57, and on the other hand, the collection of Lárus Ingólfsson, actor and set and costume designer (1905–1981), under the collection number Lbs 2019/58.
The exhibition runs until October 4, 2020.
