On Thursday, November 1, Hilma Gunnarsdóttir, a librarian and information scientist in information services and user education at the National Library of Iceland – University Library, will give the talk "21st Century Libraries. The Role of Librarians and Information Scientists in Our Times" in the lecture series Tímanna safn , which is being held on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the National Library of Iceland – University Library.
The abstract of the talk states:
"We can have a perfect library; equipped with a good collection, expensive furnishings and specially designed lighting, but it is nothing without the experts who work there. Perhaps their role has never been more important than in our time, where the flow of information seems overwhelming and fake news is purposefully produced to undermine democratic societies. The talk will discuss the role of the profession in a new century - focusing on the identity of the librarian and information scientist, his relationship with the user, his obligations to society and the political thread. The question will be asked whether freedom of information is sacred, how far we should go to defend it and how we let the heart of the library beat in time with the new times."
The talk is based in part on data collected in Ohio during the winter of 2016-2017 and will be delivered in the National Library's lecture hall between 12:05 – 12:45.
You are all very welcome.
