The book Tímanna safn is a story and picture book about the treasures preserved in the National and University Library of Iceland. They reflect a diverse collection and include books, manuscripts, private documents, magazines and records. The book is published on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the National Library, which merged under one roof in 1994.
The museum has a history that dates back to 1818, when the National Library, originally called the Collegiate Library, was founded. Over these more than 200 years, the collection has grown and its operations have changed.
The book aims to shed light on the diversity of the library's collection. It draws attention to previously under-exposed material, mixed with more well-known treasures in the collection. Photographs of each item are published, along with text describing it. The authors of the texts are both current and former library employees. An exhibition of selected items has been opened in the library.
