Last winter, on April 18, a major exhibition on the history of the museum over 200 years, entitled The Museum of Times, was opened. The exhibition provides a glimpse into the main stages in the history of the museum, from the idea to the development of the museum in various locations such as the Cathedral Loft, the Althingi House, the School of Education and the Museum House to its merger with the University Library in the National Library.

At the opening of the exhibition, Lilja Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Education and Culture, gave an address and Ingibjörg Steinunn Sverrisdóttir, National Librarian, spoke about the stages in the history of the museum and the program of the anniversary year. Children from Sigursveinn's Music School performed music and prizewinners from the 2018 Great Recitation Competition recited poems.
