A wonderful gift from the Icelandic Human Rights Office

A wonderful gift from the Icelandic Human Rights Office

On Thursday, April 9, the Icelandic Human Rights Office presented its library to the National Library of Iceland. Since the office was founded, the library has been under development and many people have sought it for sources and information. The library now has over a thousand titles, half of which are magazines, yearbooks and reports of various kinds. The formal handover of the books took place at the National Library of Iceland in the presence of staff and board members of the Icelandic Human Rights Office and part of the library's working group.

Most of the books are in English, but there are also a number in Nordic languages and a small number in French, German and Spanish. In recent years, the number of visits to the library has decreased, and with the donation, the office wants to increase public access to academic material on human rights.

Bjarni Jónsson, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Human Rights Office, said that the idea of donating the library came about some time ago and that the National Library of Iceland was always the first option. By entrusting the National Library with the preservation of the collection, the office wants to increase access to what is already a specialized collection so that it will benefit the academic community, but also those interested in human rights, in a more efficient way.

At the presentation, Ingibjörg Steinunn Sverrisdóttir, National Librarian, said that the gift contains a great deal of remarkable material, for example a good collection of new and valuable law books. Much of the material was not previously available at the museum, making the gift a great asset to the museum and a valuable addition to the collection in this field.
