This summer, Elsevier in Oxford published an eight-volume educational work on renewable energy, Comprehensive Renewable Energy. The work covers all renewable energy and includes an entire volume devoted to geothermal energy under the editorship of Professor Þorsteinn I. Sigfússon and Director of the Icelandic Innovation Centre.
At a meeting in Washington this week, the Association of American Publishers announced that the work had received the prestigious PROSE Award, which is given to large multi-volume encyclopedias.
The entire work is five thousand pages long, and the volume on geothermal energy is 300 pages long. The volume is supported by chapters written by Icelandic scientists and technicians. The authors are Guðni Axelsson, Brynhildur Davíðsdóttir, Ólafur Flóvenz, Gylfi Páll Hersir, Kristján Sæmundsson, Sigrún N. Karlsdóttir, Halldór Ármannsson, Þráinn Friðriksson, Helga Kristjánsdóttir, Ásgeir Margeirsson and Þorsteinn I. Sigfússon.
Other authors in the book include Ronald diPippo, Lad Rybach, and John Lund.
The National and University Library of Iceland has received the work for preservation in the National Museum of Iceland. Þorsteinn Ingi Sigfússon, editor of the geothermal volume, said at the presentation of the work at the National Library that the PROSE recognition was welcome and that the book was a testament to the excellence of Icelandic scientists in this field.
