Work facilities
The National Library has first-class working facilities for study and research.
An attempt is made to accommodate the different needs of students with a variety of work facilities, such as reading facilities where there is complete privacy (3rd and 4th floors), group work tables in an open space where it is possible to chat together (2nd floor), and group work rooms that staff and students of Icelandic universities can book themselves. To ensure peace of mind, those who choose to work in a facility where there is privacy are asked to turn off mobile phones.
According to Article 1 of Act No. 142/2011 on the National Library of Iceland — University Library , the National Library of Iceland — University Library is the library of the University of Iceland. In accordance with the Cooperation and Service Agreement between the University of Iceland and the National Library of Iceland — University Library, reading seats specifically intended for University students are reserved during exam periods. Other students are asked to show understanding.
On the 1st floor is the Icelandic Museum's reading room, but special rules apply to it:
Guests are kindly asked to sign the guest book, store coats on the coat rack, and bags in the lockers in the foyer.
Desks must be left empty when the room is vacated. Publications can be stored in locked cabinets in the foyer of the Icelandic Museum for the next few days upon request.
Reading table
Reading facilities are available on all floors of the building, with around 430 seats at individual reading tables. On the 3rd and 4th floors there are also tables where up to four people can sit together. It is not permitted to dedicate them to themselves, but users can leave a table for one hour, without risking losing it, by setting a clock on most tables. During exam times, students at the University of Iceland have priority for marked tables on the 3rd and 4th floors.
On the 2nd floor there are group work tables where you can talk to each other. On the first floor there are handbooks and reference books that are for use only on site. Reading tables in the Manuscript Collection and the Icelandic Museum are intended for those who are using the materials of the respective collections.
