23.04.2019 - 25.06.2020

On the birth date of Halldór Laxness, on April 23, an exhibition was opened in the library on the occasion of the centennary of Barn náttúrunnar, Halldór's first novel. The exhibition is entitled Að vera kjur eða fara burt? (To stay or go away?) and is a joint project of the National and University Library of Iceland, Gljúfrasteinn, Reykjavik UNESCO City of Literature and Forlagið. The Icelandic Museum Council and Gljúfrasteinn's Friends Association support the project. The text of the exhibition is written by scholars and artists. Haukur Ingvarsson writes about the novel Barn náttúrunnar, Halldór Guðmundsson writes about the child Halldór Laxness who was only sixteen when he wrote the story. Kristín Marja Baldursdóttir discusses art in Iceland in 1919, Árni Heimir Ingólfsson writes about the music of that time and Sjón about films. Auður Jónsdóttir writes about the family in Laxnes and Unnar Örn about the possibilities of publishing books in Iceland at the beginning of the 20th century.
