All individuals, 18 years or older, with legal address in Iceland and Icelandic ID number can borrow books from the National and University Library.
Library cards are handled at the service desk on 2nd floor upon showing documentation with a photo and ID number. The library card is included in the registration fee of the University of Iceland and staff members of the University receive a library card for free. Others pay annual fee, see fees. International students at the University of Iceland need to fill out a request for a library card.
The borrowers select themselves a password on lbs.leitir.is. The password is used to sign in to lbs.leitir.is. When a borrower has signed in, they can renew material, view circulation history and reserve materials. See instructions.
Books and other materials are circulated from the service desks on the 2nd and 4th floor. On 2nd floor there is also a self-service machine. Circulation period is usually 30 days. Some material is circulated for a shorter period, such as material in the Course reserves on the 4th floor. Teachers of the University of Iceland can request that material in the Course reserves can only be used within the Library or circulated from one to seven days. Movies are circulated for three days. If material is not available in the Library, it is possible to request it from another library on interlibrary loan for a fee. Students and staff of the University of Iceland get a 50% discount.
It is possible to renew loans up to six times if no one is waiting for the material. By signing into lbs.leitir.is users can renew their loans.
For reservation of material, one must be signed into lbs.leitir.is.
A reminder of a due date is normally sent by email. However, it is entirely the responsibility of the user to return that material on time. If material is returned after the due date, daily fines are collected, according to Fees. The National and University Library sends out a recall letter twice after the due date. If those letters are without success the material is sent for collection to Motus.
The library cards are issued to an individual and the owner of the card carries full responsibility of the material that he/she borrows. If an item is damaged or lost, the borrower must pay full value of the item.
