Circulation

All individuals, 18 years or older, with legal address in Iceland and Icelandic ID number can borrow books from the National and University Library.

Library card

The library cards are handled at the service desk on 2nd floor upon showing documentation with photo and ID number. The library card is included in the registration fee of the University of Iceland and the staff of the University receives a library card for free. Others pay annual fee according to Fees.
International students at the University of Iceland need to fill out a request for the library card.

Passwords

The borrowers select a password on lbs.leitir.is. The password is used sign in to “My pages” in lbs.leitir.is. When a borrower has registered, he/she can renew material, look at their circulation history and reserve material.

Circulation and return

Books and other materials are circulated from the service desks on the 2nd and 4th floor. On 2nd floor there is also a self-circulation machine. Circulation period is usually 30 days. Some material is circulated for a shorter period, such as material in the Study Books Collection on the 4th floor. Teachers of the University of Iceland can request that material in the Study Books Collection can only be used In the Library or circulated from one to seven days. Movies are circulated for three days. If material is not available in the Library, it is possible to request it from another library on interlibrary loan for fee. Students and staff of the University of Iceland get a 50% discount of this service.

Renewal

It is possible to renew loans up to six time if no other borrower is waiting for the material. By registering into lbs.leitir.is the users can renew their loans.

Reservations

For reservation of material, the borrower must be signed into lbs.leitir.is.

Recall of material and fines

A reminder of a due date is normally sent out on the email address of the borrower. However, it is entirely the responsibility of the user to return that material on time. If material is returned after the due date, daily fines are collected, according to Fees. The National and University Library sends out a recall letter twice after the due date. If those letters are without success the material is sent for collection to Motus.

Responsibility

The library cards are issued to an individual and the owner of the card carries full responsibility of the material that he/she borrows. If an item is damaged or lost, the borrower must pay full value of the item.
