Drawings from the Red Stocking Movement
Exhibition in the National Library
07.09.2023 - 29.10.2023

Drawings and graphics are prominent in the materials of the Redstocking Movement (1970—1982). These images were used to raise awareness, to illustrate and promote their cause, rally support, to give life to the untold stories of women and matters that were perhaps hard to discuss or understand. These images were as well used to entertain and mock their oppositions. The drawings, even the light or funny ones, are urgent and shameless, just like the problems they aimed to remedy, and carry this unique energy that was prominent in the movement. They speak directly into the image-use of other radical feminist movements of the time and connect themselves in that way into an international discourse regardless of language. The sharp lines, figures and the red colour were active participants in making the vital and gigantic change the Redstockings made for equality and women’s rights in Iceland. The images are sourced from their magazine, Forvitin rauð, the newspaper Þjóðviljinn, and the physical archives of the Women´s History Archives, who graciously hosted this research project, which was made in collaboration with the Icelandic Drawing Center, funded by Rannís, the Icelandic Student Innovation Fund. Karólína Rós Ólafsdóttir and Boaz Yosef Friedman compiled the text.
