Training and presentations
The National and University Library of Iceland (NULI) offers a variety of educational and promotional services aimed at introducing the library's collection in print and electronic form, increasing information literacy and skills in academic work. This service is for students of the University of Iceland, but attempts are also made to accommodate requests from other groups for visits and promotions. Educational and promotional services for students of the University of Iceland are organized at the request of study programs and/or individual teachers.
Educational opportunities for students at the University of Iceland
- General introduction for new students (40 minutes)
Emphasis is placed on introducing the work facilities and services available to students at the National Library, as well as the main information channels. The library's websites landsbokasafn.is, leiðarvísar.is and lbs.leitir.is are introduced. Presentations can take place at the National and University Library, University of Iceland buildings or on Teams. Request for education or promotion.- After the presentation, students should:
- Know what work facilities and services are available to them at the National and University Library.
- Find out what services are available on the library's website and at leiðarvísar.is
- Know lbs.leitir.is and be able to use it when searching for sources
- After the presentation, students should:
- Basic introduction for first-year students with a focus on a subject (90 minutes, 2 x 40 min)
The work facilities and services available to students at the National and University Library are introduced, as well as the main information sources. Search techniques are discussed, lbs.leitir.is, the library's website landsbokasafn.is and leidarvísar.is. The introduction focuses on individual subjects in consultation with teachers. The main databases in the subject in question are introduced and students are taught how to use them when searching for sources. Basic information literacy is introduced. Presentations can take place at the National and University Library, University of Iceland buildings or on Teams. Request for education or promotion.- After the presentation, students should:
- Know what work facilities and services are available to them at the National and University Library and on the library's website.
- Know leiðarvísar.is and be able to use libguides in their studies
- Know the main methods for searching for different types of information

- Training in connection with project work (40 minutes)
For all students of the University of Iceland at any time during their studies. The training is linked to project work in individual courses and students are taught to search for various types of sources in connection with this and evaluate them. The main databases in the relevant subject are used for the search. The training can take place in the National and University Library, University of Iceland buildings or on Teams. Request for education or promotion.- After the presentation, students should:
- Be able to recognize different types of sources and assess their quality
- Know about electronic databases in their subject and be able to search them
- After the presentation, students should:
- Practical review for final theses (40 minutes)
Review of source searching. Also review various practical issues, such as submissions to Skemmuna, interlibrary loans, article services, etc. Presentations can take place in the National Library, University of Iceland buildings or on Teams. Request for education or promotion.- After the presentation, students should:
- Know the main methods for searching for different information in their subject
- Find out about the museum's services, which can be used when preparing a final theses.
- Know how to return to Skemuna
- After the presentation, students should:
- EndNote introduction (30-60 minutes)
Introduction to the reference management software EndNote. Go through the basics of registering and preserving references in EndNote. Request for education or promotion.- After the presentation, students should:
- Be able to use EndNote to preserve and manage sources
- Be able to create a bibliography in EndNote
- Know the main bibliography standards in EndNote
- After the presentation, students should:
- Guided source research for UI students (30-45 minutes)
University of Iceland students are offered personal guidance in source research in connection with project work at any time during their studies. Students are encouraged to prepare well so that the time is used as efficiently as possible. You can choose to attend on site or meet on Teams. Request for guidance in source research .
