On March 31, the exhibition "The Most Valuable Steps" - Helgi Pjeturss - 150 Years of Memory was opened at the National Library.
Helgi Pjeturss (1872-1949) was one of the pioneers of the physical sciences in Iceland and was the first Icelander to complete a doctorate in geology. With his research from 1898-1910, he laid the foundation for an understanding of the country's geological history that is still in full force. In the latter part of his career, Helgi turned to philosophy and presented cosmological theories in the anthology Nýall, which was published in 1918-1947. He also engaged in research on ancient Icelandic literature. The exhibition reviews Helgi's career as a geologist and mentions examples from his cosmological theories.
The author of the exhibition is glaciologist Þorsteinn Þorsteinsson.
The exhibition is a collaborative project between the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the Institute of Earth Sciences, the University of Iceland, the Geological Society of Iceland, the Icelandic Natural History Society, the Icelandic Glacier Research Society, the Science and Welfare Foundation, the New Age Society, the Helgi Pjeturs Philosophy Institute, and the National and University Library of Iceland.
