ISMN numbers

ISMN numbers

ISMN is an international identification number for sheet music publications. The abbreviation stands for International Standard Music Number, which is standard number 10957 from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The ISMN system is a sister system to the ISBN system and is intended exclusively for identifying sheet music and sheet music-related publications.

The National Library of Iceland – University Library is responsible for the allocation of ISMN numbers for Icelandic sheet music publications and is also responsible for the promotion and dissemination of the system in Iceland. Each publisher can receive a number series that includes their publisher number or individual numbers for individual publications. Allocation and information services are provided to publishers free of charge. In return, they are required to return copies to the library in accordance with the Act on Mandatory Return. A register of Icelandic music publishers is compiled, which is part of an international register, the Music Publishers International ISMN Database .

ISBN numbers should not be used for sheet music or music books. However, sheet music or songbooks can also be assigned ISBN numbers if they contain a lot of text and/or illustrations.
