ISSN numbers
ISSN is an international identification number for serial publications. The abbreviation stands for International Standard Serial Number, which is standard number 3297 from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Due to the very large number of serials published worldwide and the processing of their records in computers, it was decided to give each title a unique number that identifies it.
The National and University Library of Iceland is the national center for the international standar serial numbering system. The role of the national center is to assign ISSN numbers for Icelandic serial publications, to register them in the ISSN computer register, and to promote and disseminate the system in Iceland. The assignment and information services are provided free of charge to publishers. In return, they are required to return copies to the library in accordance with the Act on Mandatory Return.
ISSN numbers are assigned to newspapers, magazines, periodicals, annuals, annual reports and newsletters in both printed and electronic form. It is advisable to apply for an ISSN number for new publications before the first issue is published. The publisher is responsible for having the ISSN number correctly printed on the publication, both in regular font and in barcode format.
