The surrealist group Medúsa was founded by several students at Fjölbrautskólinn in Breiðholt at the end of 1979, and the group's policy statement was published in the school newspaper Grjúpán at the beginning of 1980. The group was active for almost seven years, and during that time 30 publications were published by Medúsa, mostly poetry books, but also audio cassettes, short stories, magazines, postcards, posters and brochures.
The group held poetry readings, concerts and performances and ran a gallery for two years, Skruggubúð at Suðurgata 3a. International group exhibitions of surrealists were held there and Medúsa collaborated with surrealists in the Nordic countries on the publication of a magazine called Dunganon. In addition, Medúsa collaborated with surrealists in France and Canada, and the Medúsa members' work appeared in magazines published in France, Britain, Sweden and elsewhere. Most of the publications are by Sjón, Þór Eldon, Einar Melax, Matthías Magnússon, Ólaf Engilbertsson and Jóhamar, but Kristinn Sæmundsson, Björk Guðmundsdóttir, Margrét Örnólfsdóttir, Alfreð Flóki, Tony Pusey and others are also involved. The last release from Medúsa was published in 1986, the same year that Smekkleysa was founded, but many of those associated with Medúsa were founders of Smekkleysa.
Most of Medúsa's publications are now in the National Library's book collection and the National Library's audio collection .
Posters and postcards are also part of the material that Medúsa's family is now handing over to the National Library.
The exhibition runs until April 20, 2020.
