Minister of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education Logi Már Einarsson has appointed Örn Hrafnkelsson to the position of National Librarian. A total of 15 applications were received for the position, which was advertised on October 11th.
Örn will take over as National Librarian at the end of next month, when Ingibjörg Steinunn Sverrisdóttir retires after a long and successful career at the National Library of Iceland.
Örn holds a BA and MA in history and an MPA in public administration from the University of Iceland. Since 1993, Örn has worked at the National Library of Iceland – University Library. First as a librarian in the national department, but later as a subject manager and head of the manuscript department. Since 2011, Örn has served as the director of the preservation department of the National Library of Iceland – University Library. Örn is a great enthusiast of manuscript reading and publishing and has written numerous articles and lectures on the subject.
