WE ARE MANY is an exhibition of the collection of the Icelandic Women's History Archive, held on the occasion of the archive's 50th anniversary.
The Women's History Archive was founded on January 1, 1975, in the home of its first director, Anna Sigurðardóttir, in her apartment building near Hjarðarhagi. The archive's founding was the first Icelandic event during the United Nations International Women's Year, and 2025 has also been designated the Year of Women.
The aim of the Women's History Archive is to collect, record and preserve sources on women's history and to promote research into women's history. The archive's activities are based on the conviction that the life of the housewife who boils fish in a pot is as integral a part of history as the politician who steps into the Althingi.
Since 1996, the Women's History Archive has operated within the National and University Library of Iceland, which was Anna Sigurðardóttir's dream from the beginning - as women's history is part of national history.
