From the first floor foyer you enter the common reading room of the Conservation Department, but materials from the Icelandic National Collection, Special Collections, the Women's History Archives and the Manuscript Collection are only loaned to the reading room. The reading room has about 50 desks, 4 of which have computers. The selection of reference books in the room is mainly focused on Icelandic studies, but there are also Supreme Court judgments and the Alþingis- og Stjórnartíðindi. Guests are kindly asked to register their name in the guest book and leave their coats and bags on the coat hangers and lockers in the foyer before entering the reading room.
Requests for loans of publications in the reading room can be submitted via an electronic form or filled out on site and collected by staff. The publications are from the library's preservation fund and therefore not loaned out.
The staff of the Iceland National Department issue publications from special collections for loan to the reading room according to requests that can be sent electronically or filled out at the Iceland National Collection reception desk.
Publications are borrowed from the reading room and are issued from the Iceland National Collection of the National and University Library of Iceland unless otherwise stated. Materials are ordered from a staff member of the Women's History Archives by phone, email or on site.
You can order materials for loan in the reading room by phone, email or on site, but the materials are retrieved twice a day from the library's secure storage and orders must be placed by 9:30 and 13:30.
