Items from the possession of Björg C. Þorláksson

Björg Karítas Þorláksdóttir, known as Björg C. Þorláksson, was the first Icelandic woman to complete a doctorate in 1926 at the Sorbonne University in Paris and worked on publishing an Icelandic-Danish dictionary for two decades together with her husband Sigfús Blöndal.

Björg was born at Vesturhópshólar in Húnaþing on January 30, 1874. Her parents were Margrét Jónsdóttir and Þorlákur Símon Þorláksson. Björg's siblings were Sigurbjörg Þorláksdóttir, a teacher in Reykjavík, Jón Þorláksson, Prime Minister, and Magnús Þorláksson, a farmer at Blikastaðir in Mosfellssveit. Magnús was the only sibling who had descendants and his daughter Helga inherited items from Björg's property.

Helga Magnúsdóttir took over her fathers´ farm in Blikastaðir in 1942 and ran one of Icelands' biggest cow farms together with her husband. She was also the chairman of the Icelandic Women's Association 1963–1971 and on the central board of the Nordic Women's Association. Helga received the Grand Knight's Cross for social work in 1976. She passed away in 1999.

Helga's surviving husband, Sigsteinn Pálsson, donated items from the collection of Björg C. Þorláksson and Sigfús Blöndal to the Women´s History Archives in 2003; silver spoons with their their engraved marks, Björg's coat shield and her theatre binoculars. These objects are on display on the occasion of the centenary of the publication of Sigfús Blöndal's Icelandic-Danish dictionary.
