The magazine 19. júní

The magazine 19. júní (19th of June) was published monthly in Reykjavík in the years 1917–1929. It was focused on women's rights. The magazine reported on women's issues such as building the national hospital and women’s use of the right to vote, as well as publishing reviews of books, housing and parental advice, recipes, original or translated stories and poems, as well as coverage of unique ambitious women, both Icelandic and foreign.

Inga Lára Lárusdóttir, a teacher and women's rights activist, was the editor and publisher of the magazine. She originally founded it as a fundraiser for the National Hospital Fund and was one of the founders of the Federation of Women’s Societies in Reykjavik in the summer of 1917. The invitation letter of 19. júní states:

"It should cover all the subjects that women are interested in, home and upbringing issues, no less than public social issues. It wants to spread the word about what is happening among our sisters in other nations. It wants to embrace, all that pertains to the development of our women and can benefit us in all our diverse fields of activity, and there, as far as space allows, the word should be free to all, men and women alike who want to educate or encourage us women."

19. júní was revived by the Icelandic Women's Rights Association as a yearbook in 1951 and has been published continuously for 70 years.

Both magazines are available to read on timarit.is.
