31.03.2022 - 25.09.2022

"The Most Courageous Steps" - an exhibition on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Dr. Helgi Pjeturss was opened in the library on March 31 2022.

Helgi Pjeturss (1872-1949) was one of the pioneers of natural sciences in Iceland and was the first Icelander to complete a doctorate in geology. Through his research in 1898-1910, he laid the foundation for an understanding of the geology of the country that is still fully recognized. In the latter part of his career, Dr. Pjeturss turned to philosophy and presented cosmological theories in the collection Nýall, which was published in the years 1918-1947. He also did research on the Icelandic sagas. The exhibition reviews Dr. Pjeturss's career as a geoscientist and mentions examples from his cosmological theories.

The author of the exhibition is glaciologist Þorsteinn Þorsteinsson.

The exhibition is a collaborative project of the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland, the Geoscience Society of Iceland, the Icelandic Natural History Society, the Icelandic Glaciological Society, the Science and Welfare Scholarship Fund at the University of Iceland, the Nýal Society, the Helgi Pjeturss Philosophical Centre and the National and University Library of Iceland.
