In 1770 Ólafur Ólafsson (Ólafur Olavius, 1741-1788) wrote a book about how to grow vegetables; it was intended for both farmers and the general public. Ólafur was born at Eyri in Seyðisfjörður in the Westfjords. He went to Skálholtsskóli and then studied medicine with Bjarni Pálsson, the Icelandic Director of Health. Later, Olavius went to Copenhagen where he finished a Bachelor´s degree in philosophy. Ólafur was one of the founders of the Icelandic Society for the Advancement of Learning (Hið íslenska Lærdómslistafélag) which was the forerunner of The Icelandic Literary Society. He wrote mainly on modes of employment, his most notable book is Ökonomisk Rejse i gjennem Island (An Economic Journey through Iceland). His book Islendsk Urtagards Bok (Book on Iceland´s vegetables) is the first book that was printed in Icelandic on the cultivation of food in Iceland.
