Introductions and instructions

The National and University Library of Iceland offers various types of introductions that strive to make students familiar with the library's collection, increase information literacy and skills in academic methods of work. These services are available to students of the University of Iceland but we also try to accommodate the needs of other groups for visits and introductions. The sessions are organized on the initiative of faculty members of the UI.

Types of training sessions for students at UI:

  • General introduction for new students (40 minutes)   
    The main focus is on making students familiar with the facilities and services at the library in addition to mainstream information resources. The website of the Library, LibGuides and the online catalogue lbs.leitir.is will be navigated. The session can take place at the National and University Library, in the classroom or other facilities on the UI campus or online. Request for introduction for new students.
    • Students will:
      • Be familiar with what kind of services and facilities are available at the library
      • Know what kind of services is offered through the website of the library and in presented LibGuides
      • Be able to use lbs.leitir.is and apply that skills to their reference search

 

  • Subject specific introduction for first year students (90 minutes, 2 x 40 minutes)
    Introduction to working facilities and services available to students in addition to main information resources. Discussion on information retrieval, especially in the online catalogue lbs.leitir.is, the library's collection, of LibGuides and the library website. The main focus will be on introducing and searching the main databases in individual study fields. This instruction can be customized in collaboration with instructors. The session can take place at the National and University Library, in the classroom or other facilities on the UI campus or online. Request for introduction for first year students.
    • Students will:
      • Be familiar with what kind of services and facilities are offered at the library
      • Know the LibGuides collection and be able to make use of it in their study
      • Be aware of the main standard methods that are used to find different information

 

  • Instruction connected to coursework or a specific assignment (40 minutes)
    Available to all students at the University of Iceland at any time during their studies. This instruction should be linked to specific assignments. The instruction can take place at the National and University Library or in the classroom, other facilities on the UI campus or online. Request for instruction linked to specific projects.
    • Students will:
      • Be able to evaluate sources
      • Be familiar with accessible e-resources and be able to conduct an effective search using appropriate search technique 

 

  • Refresher course linked to final theses (40 minutes)
    Practical information for students working on their final theses. Other helpful topics will be addressed; such as interlibrary loans and submission of final theses in Skemman. The session can take place at the National and University Library, in the classroom or other facilities on the UI campus or online. Request a refresher course.
    • Students will:
      • Know different methods of finding helpful sources in specific fields of studies
      • Be familiar with services provided at the library
      • Know how to submit theses to Skemman

 

  • EndNote introduction (30-60 minutes)
    The reference management software EndNote and the basics for how to manage bibliograpies and references in it introduced. Request for EndNote introduction.
    • Student will:
      • Use EndNote to store references
      • Create formatted citations in Word
      • Know the main bibilography standards in EndNote

 

  • One-on-one instruction (30-45 minutes)
    Students at the University of Iceland can book an one-on-one session with a librarian on how to conduct a successful literature search in a specific field of study. The session can take place at the library or online. Request an appointment with a librarian
