The May Star Poetry Prize awarded

21.05.2019

The National and Univeristy Library of Iceland, in conjunction with The Writers‘ Union of Iceland has awarded Eva Rún Snorradóttir The May Star Poetry Award for her book „Fræ sem frjóvga myrkrið“. The award ceremony was at Þjóðarbókhlaðan on May 20, 2019.

This is the third year the award has been presented. The May Star, or Maístjarnan, is the only Icelandic prize awarded to a published book of poetry. All books of poetry from the previous calendar year can be submitted to the library for eligability.

The judging panel stated:

„Fræ sem frjóvga myrkið (Benedikt Publishing, 2018) is and original and varied book of poetry where the poet Eva Rún Snorradóttir utilises diverse forms, from micro-plays to prose. The first part of the book is a multi-voiced narrative of a group of girlfriends‘ trip abroad which is both sad and funny. The latter part of the book is more heartfelt and visual and includes poems about friendship, pain, self-discovery and a strange world. Eva Rún applies different perspectives and forms to combine the poetic with the theatrical, and depicts a stirring view of the world which is both strong yet ambiguous.“
