The memoirs of Guðrún Borgfjörð given to the Manuscript Collection

The manuscript collection recently acquired a manuscript containing the memoirs of Guðrún Borgfjörð (1856-1930). Guðrún was the daughter of Jón Borgfirðingur, scholar, police officer and manuscript collector and Anna Guðrún Eiríksdóttir. Guðrún was a housekeeper for her brother, Klemens, who served as a magistrate and government official. In her seventies, Guðrún began writing her memoirs, detailing life in Reykjavík in the late nineteenth century, fellow citizens, news and events. Her memoirs were first published in 1947 in a shorter version by Hlaðbúð publishing house, but are now published in their entirety. Guðrún’s manuscript was discovered a few seasons ago and it was recently handed over to the National and University Library´s Manuscript Collection by the sisters Anna and Áslaug Agnarsdóttir on behalf of Guðrún´s relatives. It has been assigned the shelf number Lbs 5787-5788 4to.
