Benedikt Special Collection

Benedikt Sigurður Þórarinsson (1861-1940), merchant in Reykjavík, donated to the University of Iceland his private collection in 1935 and it was delivered to the University in 1941. The collection contains about 8000 volumes of newspapers and journals, including a variety of ephemeral material. Furthermore, Benedikt owned a lot of press clippings and post cards. His collection contains many rare books, and he particularly emphasized the acquisition of travel books and foreign books on Iceland. His collection also contains Icelandic literature from the 19th and 20th centuries. Benedikt’s Ex Libris was designed by the Icelandic sculptor Rikarður Jónsson. Benedikt´s collection was the largest private collection of Icelandic books in his time. The collection is now located in a separate room within the special collection area.
