Jón Steffensen (1905-1991) was professor in anatomy and biophysics at the University of Iceland. He and his wife Kristín Björnsdóttir (1905-1972) bequeathed to the University his whole collection in 1982. This donation was made mainly to strengthen research in the history of Icelandic health care. The collection contains most published works on Icelandic health care and the writings of Icelandic physicians in foreign languages, along with many foreign works on the general history of medicine. It also contains many journals and yearbooks on health issues. Furthermore, the collection contains books on natural sciences, travel books, reference works on the history of Iceland, ancient mediaeval literature, foreign history as well as Icelandic and foreign literature.
