Watson´s Special Collection

The Englishman and Iceland enthusiast, Richard Mark Watson (1906-1979) bequeathed in 1975 to the National Library his collection on Iceland and Icelandic subjects in foreign languages. Among the material in his collection are the collective works of William Morris and many rare travel books which make this collection unique. It also contains many books on the Faroese Islands. Mark Watson was well known in Iceland for his interest in Icelandic animals, and he collected, among other things, knowledge on the Icelandic dog. The outcome can be found in his book The Icelandic dog 874-1956. The Watson Veterinary Hospital was a donation from him to the Icelandic nation. Furthermore, he donated to the National Museum more than one hundred watercolours by W. G. Collingwood.
