Service desk

Staff at the service desk on the 2nd floor provides general services and attend library business that is forwarded to them by telephone, on web-chat or through email. At the service desk one can borrow books and return items, reserve material and get different types of guidance and assistance. The email address of the circulation service is utlan (at)

The information services staff is available between 8-16 mon-fri. They can assist with finding sources, bibliographic tools (EndNote) and information retrieval. Information specialists provide a variety of instructions for students at the University of Iceland. The email address of information service is upplys (at)

Open working area for groups

On 2nd floor there are 16 tables for small and large groups. The 2nd floor is a “speaking floor” which means that speaking in a low voice is allowed. On the 2nd floor are handbooks and reference works, and those works are only for use in the Library.

Computers and Internet

Across from the service desk: Access to the Internet (30 minutes) Passwords from the service desk.

The Main Library (Þjóðarbókhlaða) offers a wireless network (LBS_HBS/HotSpot) which can be used by everybody with own laptop/or smart-phone.

Printing and photocopying

Guests can print documents from the Library‘s computers on a printer which is located at the service desk.

Photo-copying machines are located on 2nd, 3rd and 4th floor of the building. These are self-service machines and cards for those are sold on 2nd floor.


The Library holds about 150 lockers for use by library guests. Keys are given at the circulation desk on 2nd floor against the presentation of a library card and a payment of security deposit. It is forbidden to store library material in the lockers unless they have been checked out first.
