Books

The National and University Library of Iceland's collection consists of about a million items of various kinds. The library's publications are arranged according to the Dewey classification system. They are also registered in the joint catalogue of Icelandic libraries, which can be found at leitir.is .


Books for loan are available on the 3rd and 4th floors of the National and University Library, but books for loan are also in the library's storage rooms and are handled by staff. The Icelandic National Collection on the 1st floor houses Icelandic books that are only accessible in the library's reading room. Handbooks are available for use on the 2nd floor, but they are not loaned out.

Special collections

Special collections are part of the Icelandic National Collection. Most have been donated to the National and University Library by individuals and institutions, on the condition that they be preserved as a whole. These collections are often given in memory of their previous owners and are intended to support research in their respective fields.

Icelandic National Collection

The Icelandic National Collection communicates the nation's cultural heritage by collecting, preserving and providing access to printed materials published in Iceland. According to the Printing Act, copies of all printed materials must be submitted to the museum.

Printed handbooks are available in the work and reading rooms at the National and University Library and in Lögberg. The library also has a selection of handbooks in electronic format.

A large number of e-books are accessible through the website of the National and University Library of Iceland. The books are either in national access, special subscriptions of the University of Iceland or the library, but also books in open access.

Islandica Extranea

According to the Law on the National and University Library of Iceland (No. 142/2011), the library is obliged to collect books/materials related to Iceland that are published in other countries. This publication is called Islandica extranea. The library acquires this material through purchases and donations.

The National and University Library of Iceland accepts donations that strengthen the collection and are in accordance with its acquisition policy. Those wishing to make gifts to the library must, in advance, contact the library's contact persons.

Requests and suggestions for book purchases. Students, scholars, and other users of the library can make suggestions for book purchases.

Interlibrary loan

The library provides its users with books and journal articles from other university and research libraries. Books are not ordered from the City Library or public libraries in the capital area.

The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a standard from the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Each number is unique and the main purpose of the International Book Numbering System is to distinguish each publication from others as best as possible.
